About Static IP AddressesHelp Guide
OverviewAs a Qwest Choice Internet Prime, Qwest.net OfficeWorks customer you can lease static IP addresses for use with your computers using the Lease Static IP Addresses tool. Below are answers to some common static IP questions.
A: Static IP addresses are numeric addresses that uniquely identify your computer(s) on the Internet.
A: Static IP addresses allow you to do Web hosting locally at your home or business. You can also use them to remotely access your computers over the Internet (for example, telnet or FTP).
A: No, you can store your Web site on Qwest.net's servers and map your private domain name to your Web site. For many people, storing your Web site on our servers is the preferred method. If you choose to use static IP addresses and run your computer as a server you may need special "server" software for your machine. If you have an analog dial-up connection, you cannot use lease static IP addresses. For information on Web hosting on Qwest.net's servers. Look at help on Web Publishing. If you have your own domain name or plan to register one for use with your Qwest.net hosted Web site, refer to the account tools: DNS section for more information.
A: These IP addresses are called static because the same numeric address is always associated with the same computer. When you connect to Qwest.net through a dial-up or dedicated connection without using static IP addresses, you are dynamically assigned a numeric IP address which is used for the duration of the connection. Since everyone does not connect at the same time, this allows more efficient use of the limited pool of IP addresses.
A: Your lease of these static IP addresses will be in effect until you choose to delete them from your Qwest.net account or until you cancel your Internet service from Qwest.net. One domain name will be supported for all the addresses. For example, ftp.mycompany.com and www.mycompany.com counts as support for one domain, but www.yourcompany.com and www.mycompany.com would count as two domains and would not be supported.
A: Please refer to the Overview of Qwest.net section for links to tools for use with static IP.
