TCP/IP Stack Configuration for Static IP Addresses

Overview

Once you have leased a block of static IP addresses, you will need to configure the TCP/IP stack on each individual computer with one of the static IP addresses. You will also need to specify the subnet mask, gateway and domain name server.

As mentioned in the follow-up e-mail you received from Qwest®, the static IP addresses you have leased will go into effect by 5 p.m. on the next business day after you leased them. Please do not attempt to update your TCP/IP stacks prior to that time or you may loose Internet connectivity.

MicrosoftWindows 95

1. From the Start menu go to Settings and select Control Panel.
2. Click Network.
3. From the Configuration tab, select TCP/IP and choose Properties.
   Note: If there are multiple TCP/IP items in the list box, select the one associated with Ethernet or Qwest.net.
4. From the IP Address tab, select Specify an IP address and type in one of your five user-assignable addresses.
5. Type in the Subnet Mask listed below the leased addresses in your welcome letter and in your follow-up e-mail.
6. From the Gateway tab, type in your Gateway address in the New gateway box and click Add.
   Note: You can find the gateway address listed below the leased addresses in your welcome letter and in your follow-up e-mail. If there is an existing gateway address, do not remove it.
7. Under the DNS Configuration tab, select Enable DNS.
8. Type in a Host and Domain name if desired. Note that both are optional.
9. Type in your DNS Server Address in the DNS Server Search Order box and click Add.
   Note: You can find your DNS Server address listed below the leased addresses in your welcome letter and in your follow-up e-mail.
   An example of a Host Name is Jane's_PC or NTWorkstation1. It is simply used to uniquely identify a PC.
   An example of a Domain Name is qwest.net. Type your own domain name if you have registered one or if you have a local area network with a specific sub-domain name associated with it (this would be set up by a network administrator).
10. Click OK in the TCP/IP Properties window.
11. Click OK in the Network control panel window.
12. Restart your computer. Your static IP addresses should now be configured on your computer.

Microsoft Windows NT

1. From the Start menu go to Settings and select Control Panel.
2. Click Network.
3. Under the Protocols tab and within the Network Protocols window, select TCP/IP Protocol and click on Properties.
   Note: If there are multiple TCP/IP items in the list box, select the one associated with Ethernet or Qwest.net.
4. From the IP Address tab, select the Specify an IP address radio button and type in one of your five user assignable addresses.
5. Type in your Subnet Mask listed below below the leased addresses in your welcome letter and in your follow-up e-mail.
6. Click Advanced to open the Advanced IP Addressing window.
7. Click Add below the Gateways list.
8. Type your gateway address into the TCP/IP Gateway Address box.
9. Click Add.
   Note: Make sure that the gateway address you just entered is the first one in the list box by selecting it and clicking UP. If there is an existing Gateway address, do not remove it.
10. Click OK.
11. Under the DNS tab, type in a host and domain name.
    Note: both are optional.
12. Click Add below the DNS Service Search Order box.
13. Type your DNS server address into the TCP/IP DNS Server box.
    Note: You may need to type in a primary and secondary DNS address. (You can find your DNS Server address listed below the leased addresses in your welcome letter and in your follow-up e-mail.) Make sure that these two addresses are listed first in the list box by selecting and clicking UP. If there are existing DNS addresses, do not remove them.
14. Click Add.
    Note: An example of a Host Name is Jane's_PC or NTWorkstation1. It is simply used to uniquely identify a PC.

15. Click OK in the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window.
16. Click OK in the Network control panel window.
17. Restart your computer. Your static IP addresses should now be configured on your computer.

Macintosh (Mac OS 8.xx or 7.6)

1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panel and select TCP/IP.
2. In the TCP/IP window, click on the arrow next to the Connect via and select Ethernet.
3. The setup configuration will now be manual.

   IP Address: Enter the TCP/IP address from your letter.
   Subnet Mask: Enter the subnet mask from your letter.
   Router Address: Enter the TCP/IP address for the gateway address from your letter.

4. Close the TCP/IP window.
5. Restart your computer. Your static IP addresses should now be configured on your computer.

Macintosh (Mac OS 7.5.x or anything using MacTCP)

1. From the Apple menu choose Control Panel and select MacTCP.
2. Select Ethernet and click More.
3. Select obtain address and change the setting to manual.
4. Select routing information type in the gateway address, located below the leased addresses in your welcome letter and in your follow-up e-mail. You can at this time enter the domain information under Domain name server information.
5. Click OK.
6. From the MacTCP panel type in the IP address from your letter in IP Address.
7. Click More.
8. You should now be back in the main panel and see your IP address and subnet mask under IP Address. If all is correct and matches what you have on your letter click OK and close MacTCP.
9. Restart your computer. Your static IP addresses should now be configured on your computer.
